NMU cross country runners lauded

MARQUETTE – National all-academic honors have gone out to five members of the women’s cross country team at Northern Michigan University.

On Friday, it was announced that the quintet earned NCAA Division II All-Academic mention by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The five are senior Megan Edic, who is majoring in biology and physiology; sophomore Kameron Burmeister of Menominee, who majors in nursing; sophomore Caroline Brisbois, a biology major; sophomore Vivian Hett, who majors in sports science; and freshman Sophie McDonald, a nursing major.

To be eligible, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and finish in the top half of the field at the NCAA Championships or the top 30 percent at their NCAA regional meet.

Fifty athletes from the GLIAC, 31 women and 19 men, earned this all-academic honor.

NMU qualified for the national championship meet for the first time since 2005 and finished ninth last fall, while coming in fourth at the NCAA Midwestern Regional. The Wildcats achieved top-10 status in six of the coaches group’s eight national polls.
