Late Weatherly basket lifts NMU to win

By Journal Sports Staff

HILLSDALE – Capping a fourth quarter rally, Tess Weatherly sank a layup with six seconds left in regulation to give the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team a 58-57 GLIAC win over host Hillsdale on Saturday.

A Sarah Theut layup gave the Chargers a late 57-56 advantage. But after a time out, the Wildcats’ Darby Youngstrom found Weatherly in the paint for the game-winning layup.

Northern (12-13 overall, 11-8 GLIAC) had entered the final quarter trailing 46-39.

The Wildcats trailed by nine, 55-46, with 3:49 to play before going on a 10-0 run to steal the lead at 56-55 following a Bre Gaspervich triple with 1:19 to play.

Gaspervich led NMU with 26 points, five rebounds and four steals.

The junior has netted at least 20 points in three-straight games and in four of the past five.

Youngstrom finished with 17 points.

For Hillsdale (9-14, 6-13), Makenna Ott came off the bench to knock down 23 points.

Northern trailed at the half, 31-21.
