Wildcat women clobbered, 70-30
ALLENDALE – Unable to get into an offensive flow, the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team fell to host and GLIAC foe Grand Valley State on Thursday, 70-30.
Coach Troy Mattson’s Wildcats, now 5-10 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC, took a 5-0 lead highlighted by a Chloe Tompkins lay up and free throw.
But GVSU (11-4, 6-3) responded by going on a 15-0 run to take a 15-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Kendall Martenet found Darby Youngstrom on the perimeter for a 3-point basket to end the Lakers’ run with 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Lakers’ offense continued to surge in the second, using another 15-0 run to take a 30-8 lead late in the first half.
GVSU outscored the Wildcats 20-8 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Youngstrom and Houghton’s Sydney Dillinger posted six points each for NMU, while teammate Taylor Hodell collected seven rebounds.
The Wildcats play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ferris State.
