By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University dominated by winning nine of 15 events against Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State at the Northern Challenge track and field meet held at the Superior Dome on Saturday.

In its lone home meet of the season, the Wildcats improved three provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA national meet.

They all came in field events. Michelle Juergen won both the high jump in 5 feet, 5.75 inches and long jump in 17-8, improving her provisional mark in the high jump.

Ine Mylle won the triple jump with a better provisional leap of 38-6.25, as did Jasmine Williams in the weight throw with her heave of 58-4. Williams was also second in the shot put with 42-0.75.

The most impressive victory, however, may have been by Northern’s Kameron Burmeister in the 5,000-meter run. The Menominee High School grad beat the field by more than two minutes, clocking 17 minutes, 54.53 seconds. LSSU’s Hannah Passino was second in 19:59.48, while NMU’s Catherine Swiderski was less than a second back in third in 20:00.27.

“We had … many personal records and season-best performances,”?NMU?coach Jenny Ryan said.

Other winners included Yasmin Jelassi, who edged teammate Avadon James by one-hundredth of a second in the 55 dash in 7.31 seconds, and Jasmine King, who came in at 8.58 in the 55 hurdles to Mylle’s second-place 8.86.

NMU’s Kieren Becker won for the first time this season, taking the 800 in 2:20.54 as teammate and Marquette Senior High School grad Shayla Huebner was just beat out in and came in second in 2:20.71.

Another Wildcat, Abby Fifarek, won the 3,000 by nearly 13 seconds in 10:55.75.
