NMU swimmers set records, finals qualifying times

BIG RAPIDS – Northern Michigan University’s swimming and diving teams placed second and third after the three-day Calvin College Invitational.

The NMU women were runners-up to Grand Valley State, scoring 1,306 points to GV’s 2,035. The Northern men were third in their meet with 1,181.5 after GVSU had 1,978 and Calvin 1,372.5.

Northern teams totaled seven school records and 10 “B” cuts for the NCAA finals meets.

Savanna Saunders broke a pool and school record in the 200-meter backstroke while setting an NCAA B cut time with her 2:00.70 win.

Crystal Bennet set two B cuts in the 100 butterfly, winning in 56.11 seconds, and 100 freestyle, where she was fourth in :52.26.

Other B cuts came from Rachel Borchardt in the 500 free, in second place in 4:56.69; Dana Stroven in the 200 breaststroke with a second place 2:19.89; and the 200 medley relay team of Regan Kilburn, Becca Arakelian, Bennet and Courtney Konopitski, who were third in 1:45.21.

The men’s team set school six records in 200 back by Renars Bundzis with a first place 1:47.56; 100 free by Marc Perello; 200 breast by Perello with a second place 2:00.37; 500 free by Grantas Dapkus with a first place 4:31.83; the 400 free relay of Perello, Bundzis, Dapkus and Benjamin Lindberg in 3:06.59; and the 200 medley relay with Bundzis, Perello, Ryan Knox-Leonard and David Wulffe in 1:32.83.

B cuts were made by Dapkus in the 500 free, Bundzis and Knox-Leonard in the 200 back and Perello in the 200 breast.
