Wildcats’ Whitehead named Player of the Week

BAY CITY – Madison Whitehead of the Northern Michigan University volleyball team was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week by the league on Monday.

Whitehead led the Wildcats on Saturday to a five-set upset of Ferris State, the nation’s No. 1 ranked NCAA Division II team, posting a career-high 26 kills and a match-high .426 hitting percentage.

“Madison has developed into a very strong blocker and attacker,” NMU head coach Dominic Yoder said. “She offers tremendous offensive versatility to our team and has been giving us a very consistent performance over the last six weeks.”

Ferris State entered the match undefeated in the GLIAC at 12-0 and had only lost one set in those matches.

“Madison’s performance Saturday really capped off her work ethic in practice the last few weeks,” Yoder said.

Over the weekend, Whitehead averaged 3.80 kills per set and a .300 hitting percentage.

She also posted 10 blocks, seven coming in the Wildcats’ five-set loss to Grand Valley State on Friday.

Whitehead and the Wildcats return to action at 7 tonight when they play at rival Michigan Tech.

The match will be televised live on WLUC-TV6 and Fox-U.P.
