Wildcats prepare for football home opener

MARQUETTE – Looking to rebound from a season-opening loss Saturday on the road, the Northern Michigan University football team will begin its home schedule this weekend at the Superior Dome.

Coach Chris Ostrowsky’s Wildcats will host Quincy (Illinois) of the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 4 p.m. Saturday.

This will be the Hawks’ first game of the season after going 6-5 overall a year ago, which included a 31-14 loss to NMU at their home field.

Quincy, picked to finish fifth in the preseason GLVC coaches’ poll, returns 38 lettermen and 20 starters. Running back Chris Harris, named the league’s Freshman of the Year, leads the group.

NMU opened its season with a 20-7 road loss to Northwood University. The Wildcats suffered five turnovers and failed to capitalize on two field-goal attempts.

Northern quarterback Shaye Brown threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, but also had three interceptions.

Jake Mayor rushed for 62 yards on nine carries.

On defense, L.J. Liston led the Wildcats with 19 tackles. Austin McCarthy added a sack.

A pair of promotions will be featured at Saturday’s game.

Youth Sports Day will be observed. Eighth-graders and younger who wear their sports uniforms to the game will get in free.

In addition, after the game, the movie “Remember the Titans” will be shown on the large screen.

Fans will be able to sit on the field for the movie. A complimentary chair check will be available in the southwest entrance of the dome by the ‘Cats Corner Store.

Concessions will remain open during the movie.
