NMU golf wins Wildcat Invite

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan men’s golf team shot a 612 over two rounds of play on the par-71 Greywalls to win the Wildcat Invitational team title.

“It’s a great feeling to get a win on our home course against great teams,” head coach Kyle Wittenbach said. “Greywalls played tough today, but the guys held it together. I’m proud of them and am excited about where we’re heading as a program.”

In the first round Saturday, the Wildcats shot a 307, putting them in second to Ferris State (304) going into Sunday. They shaved two strokes from their first round total, which helped them edge Grand Valley State (614) and Lake Superior State (615) for the title.

Northern Michigan was led by Martin Eliasson (75-77=152) and Austin Elsner (78-74=152), who tied for sixth. Aaron Cheong (77-78=155) and Cyril Botha (77-80=157) also placed in the top 15, claiming 12th and 15th respectively.

The individual champion was Lake Superior State’s Zac Carson (75-71=146). Wayne State’s Crawford McKinlay (76-72=148), Saginaw Valley State’s Ryan Peruski (74-76=150), Grand Valley State’s Tyler Polulak (77-73=150) and Lake Superior State’s Jason Kerr (78-72=150) rounded out the top five.

The Wildcats return to action next weekend when they compete at the GLIAC Fall Invitational in South Haven, Mich.
