Remembering the best

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s Sports Hall of Fame will gain five new members next month.

They will be enshrined Saturday in the Great Lakes Room of the Bottum University Center.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, which honors Wildcat student-athletes for their achievements during the year.

The dinner will be served at 6 p.m., with the program to follow at 7 p.m.

The event is open to the public, but tickets must be purchased in advance through the Superior Dome ticket office or online at www.nmu.edu/ tickets.

The five inductees are Heather (Koenig) Drukker, volleyball; Jennifer (Lahr) Friedrich, cross country and track and field; Darryl Plandowski, hockey; Sue (Skala) Veselik, swimming and diving; and Ricky Volcy, men’s basketball.

Drukker was a three-time letter winner at NMU and was a member of the Wildcats’ 1993 NCAA Division II volleyball national championship team. She was a first team All-American in 1992 and 1993, and was also named all-conference, all-region and NCAA Elite 8 All-Tournament. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in management in 1995.

Friedrich competed for the Wildcats from 2001-05 for both the cross country and track and field programs, earning eight letters in the process. She was an All-American after finishing third in the mile at the 2005 NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championship. While qualifying for the same event, she clocked the fastest time in the mile that year at 4:47.05 and still holds the GLIAC record for the outdoor mile.

She competed in seven NCAA championships as a Wildcat in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 2005.

Plandowski was a member of NMU’s 1991 NCAA Division I hockey championship squad, scoring the game-winning goal in the 8-7 triple overtime national championship victory over Boston University. That goal was part of a hat trick he recorded in the contest.

A four-time letter winner, Plandowski appeared in 166 games for NMU and had 53 goals, 78 assists and 131 points. He earned his bachelor’s degree in speech communication in 2001.

Veselik competed for the NMU swimming and diving team from 1984-87, earning four letters. She was a member of the 200 freestyle relay unit that won the 1987 NCAA Division II championship.

Veselik was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1987.

Volcy is the third all-time leading scorer in NMU men’s basketball history after having played for the Wildcats from 2003-07. He earned four letters and was named MVP at NMU three of his four seasons.

During his senior season, he was selected a first team All-American by the NCAA and NABC, was named GLIAC Player of the Year and was selected to play in the NABC/NCAA Division II All-Star Game.
