NMU runners, throwers set records, qualify for nationals

HILLSDALE – Athletes on the Northern Michigan University track and field team set two school records Saturday and recorded four NCAA provisional outdoor qualifying marks at the Hillsdale Invitational.

“We had a great meet today,” NMU head coach Jenny Ryan said on Saturday. “The team performed well against some very good competition. We had some highlights with top-level marks and great efforts all around.”

NMU senior Brittni Wirtz set a school record and provisionally qualified in the 100-meter dash with a winning time of 11.89 seconds. Junior teammate Avadon James was second in 11.99, which is also a provisional qualifying time.

Wildcats freshman Kameron Burmeister set an NMU record in the 5,000 in 17:41.89, good enough for second place, while James won the 200 dash in 24.93.

In the discus, Northern sophomore Samanthia Johnson improved her provisional qualifying mark with a 47.05-meter throw to take second, while sophomore teammate Jasmine Williams also set a provisional qualifying mark by finishing third with a 46.74-meter toss.

In the 3,000 steeplechase, NMU sophomore Shannon Flynn was second in 11:45.07 and freshman Kate Thayer third in 11:51.42.

NMU returns to action Friday for the two-day Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State.
