Ex-NMU QB signs with Packers
MARQUETTE – Former Northern Michigan University quarterback Matt Blanchard, who made his mark collegiately at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has signed a contract to play for the Green Bay Packers.
Blanchard’s agent, Paul Sheehy, made the announcement Wednesday, according to a report from the Iron Mountain Daily News.
Blanchard saw limited time for the Wildcats in 2008, completing 4 of 8 passes as one of five quarterbacks to play for the team that season.
He then transferred to Whitewater, where he was a backup in 2009 before becoming starter in 2010 as he helped lead the Warhawks to a 45-0 record and three consecutive NCAA Division III national championships from 2009-11.
Blanchard, a native of Lake Zurich, Ill., is projected to be the Packers’ No. 3 quarterback behind current NFL most valuable player Aaron Rodgers and former Wisconsin signal caller Scott Tolzien.
Blanchard, who is Whitewater’s all-time leader in completion percentage at 70.4 percent, was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Bears in 2012 and spent the 2013 season as a member of the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad before being placed on injured reserve in the 2014 campaign.
