Lawrence, Kearney pace NMU

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University senior Debbi Lawrence nabbed a third-place finish in the women’s 50-meter freestyle at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday in Indianapolis.

Lawrence clocked a school-record time of 22.79 seconds, which broke her own record. The effort gave her All-American honors.

Senior Madisen Sechena finished 25th in the women’s 200 individual medley in 2:07.14 in the preliminary races.

Sophomore Rachel Borchardt posted a season-best time in the 1,000 free, finishing in 25th place in 10:21.32.

On Tuesday, NMU senior Molly Kearney won the one-meter diving event in the prequalifying meet to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Diving Championships.

Kearney took the event with 265.75 points.

She also finished ninth in three-meter diving with 255.75 points. Kearney now advances to the diving championship event to be held today.

Fellow Wildcat senior Sophia Garris also competed in the prequalifying diving meet, finishing 19th in the three-meter event with a score of 232.15.

She placed 31st in one-meter diving with 150.90.
