Colla’s 21 points not enough for NMU women to advance

ALLENDALE – Senior guard Alyssa Colla moved up on the all-time scoring list, but the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team still dropped a 74-52 decision to Grand Valley State Wednesday night in GLIAC quarterfinal play held at downstate Allendale.

Colla poured in 21 points to run her career total to 1,567, good for third all-time at NMU.

But the host Lakers used a 16-4 run in the first half to jump out to a 25-12 lead with 8:10 remaining.

GVSU extended its lead to as many as 16 points, but a layup from NMU senior guard Lauren Gruber at the buzzer put the halftime score at 38-26.

The Lakers opened the second half with an 11-2 surge to go up 49-28 with 15:48 remaining.

Gruber finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.

NMU junior forward Nea Makela and sophomore Bre Gaspervich each pulled down six rebounds.
