Bratrud leads NMU skiers

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Senior Kyle Bratrud of Northern Michigan University earned All-American status Wednesday by finishing seventh in the men’s 10-kilometer freestyle race during the first day of competition at the NCAA Skiing Championships.

Bratrud clocked a time of 26 minutes, 22.3 seconds to lead the Wildcats’ men’s contingent.

Senior Erik Soderman was next for NMU 27.5 seconds later (26:49.8) to finish in 15th place.

Sophomore Fredrik Schwencke crossed the line in 27:23.8 to finish in 30th.

Senior Jordyn Ross led the women’s team in 14:54.8 in the 5K freestyle race to finish 12th.

Junior Felicia Gesior was next for NMU in 16th, clocking 15:19.1.

Sophomore Kristen Bourne rounded out the women’s squad, finishing in 35th in 15:58.8.

The Wildcats are a combined eighth out of 15 teams with 76 points. NMU is fifth on the men’s side out of 11 teams and eighth out of 15 on the women’s side.

The Wildcats also had four members of its squad competing at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Soda Springs, California.

NMU freshman Vivian Hett won the women’s Under-20 5K freestyle race in 17:25.4.

Fellow NMU freshman Caroline Brisbois was 11th in 19:01.3, just ahead of NMU freshman Vera Gruber, who finished in 19:04.6.

Freshman Ian Torcha took second place in the men’s U20 10K race with a time of 31:01.0.
