Soderman leads NMU skiers

MINNEAPOLIS – Led by men’s race winner Erik Soderman, seven male and female Northern Michigan University nordic skiers placed in their top 10 during the final day of competition at the Central Collegiate Ski Association’s Distance Championships on Saturday.

Four Wildcat men and three Wildcat women made the top 10 of their respective events.

Soderman, a senior, won the men’s 10-kilometer classic race, clocking in at 19 minutes, 27.2 seconds. NMU sophomore Fredrik Schwencke was runner-up, coming in just over two seconds later in 19:29.5.

Sophomore Adam Martin was next in for NMU in 20:03.4 for fourth place, while sophomore Krystof Kopal came in eighth in 20:46.4.

Senior Jordyn Ross led Northern’s women with a second-place finish in the 5K classic, clocking 14:04.3. Michigan Tech’s Alice Flanders won the race in 13:53.2.

Junior Felicia Gesior was next in for the Wildcats in fourth at 14:23.0, followed by sophomore Sophie Schimpl in eighth in 14:46.8, freshman Vera Gruber 11th in 15:00.6, freshman Rebekka Schueder 13th in 15:04.5 and sophomore Megan Edic 17th in 15:19.3.

The Wildcats return to action when they host the Upper Peninsula Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.
