NMU’s Gruber nets 1,000th point

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University women’s basketball senior Lauren Gruber scored her 1,000th point on Saturday afternoon during the Wildcats’ 79-74 overtime victory at Ferris State.

The 5-foot-8 guard scored a career-high 27 points in the game as she became the 23rd player in the program’s history to reach the milestone.

Gruber now has 1,007 points in her career and is NMU’s second-highest scorer this season, averaging 13.3 points per game with a season total of 280 points. This would put her on pace to set a new career high for points in a single season, exceeding the 312 she scored as a sophomore.

She leads the team in field-goal percentage, shooting 50.3 percent from the field and 3-point field goal percentage at 44.1 percent. Gruber also ranks ninth in the nation this season with her 90.5 percent success rate from the free throw line.

She is also the team’s leading rebounder, averaging 5.6 rebounds per game, and is 22 away from 500 rebounds in her career.

Gruber, a native of West Bend, Wisconsin, was named to the GLIAC All-Defensive Team the past two seasons and the all-league Second Team last season. This year, she was named to the All-GLIAC Preseason Second Team and as the North Division Player of the Week on Jan. 26.

NMU’s next game is at the Berry Events Center against Saginaw Valley State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
