Burmeister sets NMU record

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University freshman Kameron Burmeister went into the Wildcats record books Saturday as the Wildcats hosted the Northern Challenge at the Superior Dome.

Burmeister won the five-kilometer run in 17 minutes, 54.13 seconds, while senior teammate Olivia Howard was runner-up in 18:46.54.

“It was great to have a home track meet again at NMU,” head coach Jenny Ryan said about the only home meet the Wildcats have during the winter indoor or spring outdoor seasons.

“Our team had some good performances, including a school record by Kameron Burmeister. We are continuing to improve our results and need to keep focused toward the GLIAC Championships.”

The GLIAC Indoor Championships will be held Feb. 28 and March 1 in Saginaw.

Team scores were not kept at Saturday’s meet, which was also attended by Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Wisconsin-Superior and St. Scholastica.

NMU senior Brittni Wirtz won the 55 dash in 7.26 seconds with Wildcats sophomore Avadon James second in 7.38. James also won the 200 dash in 26.53 seconds.
