NMU ski team dominates at Michigan Tech

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University nordic ski team was dominant over the weekend at the Upper Peninsula Duals hosted by Michigan Tech University, sweeping the top five spots Sunday in the women’s 10-kilometer classic race and the top four spots in the men’s 15K classic.

NMU junior Felicia Geisor won the women’s 10K classic in 32 minutes, 46.1 seconds. Sophomore Kristen Bourne took second in 33:04.5, while freshman Vivian Hett was third in 33:13.6, senior Jordyn Ross fourth in 33:20.1 and freshman Vera Gruber fifth in 33:21.0.

All of the Wildcats women skiers finished in the top 12 as Sophie Schimpl was seventh in 33:30.8, Megan Edic eighth in 34:16.1, Rebekka Schueder ninth in 34:18.3, Hanna Boyer 11th in 34:26.1 and Caroline Brisbois 12th in 34:54.6.

Sophomore Fredrik Schwencke won the men’s 15K race in 42:19.8, while sophomore Adam Martin was second in 42:45.3. Senior Erik Soderman was third in 42:55.0 and senior Kyle Bratrud fourth in 43:44.9.

All of the Northern men’s skiers finished in the top eight as Ian Torchia was sixth in 44:09.4 and Krystof Kopal eighth in 45:30.0.

On Saturday, Ross was second in the women’s 5K race in 14:00.4 for Northern’s best finish, followed by Geisor in third, 14:02.5; Bourne fourth, 14:19.6; Gruber fifth, 14:27.9; and Hett sixth, 14:33.0.

For the men, Bratrud won the 10K race in 24:23.2, Soderman second in 24:45.3 and Martin third in 25:01.6.

The Wildcats return home to host the NMU Open on Saturday and Sunday at Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.

Track teams takes 4 1sts

At Duluth, Minnesota, the NMU women’s track and field team found success at its indoor season opener on Saturday.

NMU finished first in four events at The Opener hosted by the College of St. Scholastica.

Sophomore Jasmine Williams set a school record in the shot put with a toss of 41 feet, 2.25 inches to win the event. Brittni Wirtz won the 60- meter dash in 7.77 seconds, Jasmine King took first in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.25 and the 4-by-200 relay team also won.

Junior Danielle Brzezinski also set a NMU record in the 300 dash in 42.74 as she finished third.

The Wildcats are off until Jan. 23 when they compete in the Doug Hansen Open in Saginaw.

Swimmers finish 2nd

At Grand Rapids, the NMU women’s swimming and diving team finished as runner-up at the three-day Calvin Invitational on Saturday.

The Wildcats scored 843.0 points as fellow GLIAC competitor Grand Valley State won with 1,066.5.

On the final day, Northern senior Debbi Lawrence set two meet and pool records while sophomore teammate Madisen Sechena set an NMU record.

Lawrence set records while winning both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 freestyle, clocking 55.07 seconds in the fly for a victory of nearly a full second, then 50.69 in the 100 free for a 1.1-second win in that event.

A day after setting a school record in the 100 breaststroke, Sechena was able to do the same in the 200 breast, winning in 2:17.35 as senior teammate Emily Brennan was just behind her as runner-up in 2:23.18.

Freshman Abbi Schieber was able to qualify for a final for the first time in her Wildcat career in the 200 fly, finishing 13th in the finals in 2:16.41.

In the diving, senior Molly Kearney made a national championship meet qualifying score in both one- and three-meter events with scores of 453.0 and 434.77 points, respectively.

“It was a wonderful meet for our team today,” NMU head coach Heidi Voigt said. “We had many personal and season best times (with) three school records broken and two pool records; (our) team was great (and we had) lots of support from Wildcat parents.”
