Wrestlers shine in Panama

MARQUETTE – A trip to Panama City, Panama ,proved fruitful Saturday for members of the Greco-Roman wrestling team from the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site.

The squad won the team title at the International Eduardo Campbell Cup competition and earned five individual medals as well.

The NMU-OTS team captured its second straight title in this competition. City de Panama was runner-up, while Brazil, Costa Rica and Columbia also took part.

NMU-OTS gold medalists were Brandon Rice of Washington, Illinois, in the 66-kilogram weight class and Parker Betts of St. Michaels, Minnesota, at 130 kg.

Silver medals went to Joey DeNova of Forston, Georgia, at 66 kg and Brandon Marshall of Keystone Heights, Florida, at 84 kg.

Kyndall Rutz of Englewood, Colorado, earned a bronze medal at 59 kg.

“The hard work our athletes are putting forward each day in practice is paying off,” coach Rob Hermann said.
