NMU women swimmers runners-up at 3-day Calvin Invite

GRAND RAPIDS — The women’s swimming and diving team at Northern Michigan University finished as runner-up at the three-day Calvin Invitational that ended Saturday and included a half-dozen teams.
The Wildcats totaled 1,603.5 points as Grand Valley State won with 2,152.5 and Findlay came in third with 1,307.5. Host Calvin was fourth with 1,127.5, while Indiana Wesleyan had 594 and Lawrence 156.
Over the three days, Annika Geyer led NMU by scoring 77 points, while teammate Laura Stockinger contributed 67, Abby Keen 63, and Sophia Moore and Carlotta Santi each had 61.
Select members of the women’s team are expected to participate on Saturday morning in Sarasota, Florida, at the Open Water Collegiate Nationals held by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.
For everyone else on the team, their next meet isn’t until Jan. 17 at Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Here is a wrapup of each day of competition at the Calvin Invite:
Thursday
The Wildcats accumulated 455.5 points on opening day, placing them second at that time.
Evie DeCarlo scored 26 of those points, finishing fourth in the 200-yard individual medley finals, along with fourth as a member of the 400 medley relay and seventh with the 200 freestyle relay.
Santi was right with her with 25 points, getting fifth in the 500 free and ninth on the 200 free relay.
And teammates Manuela Araujo and
Geyer each put up 24 points. Araujo was sixth in the 200 IM and swam with the fourth-place 400 medley relay, while Geyer was sixth in the 500 free and also with the ninth-place 400 medley relay.
NMU’s A relay of Vicky Burda, Laura Stockinger, Abby Keen and Joanne Arbic was fourth in 200 free relay in 1 minutes, 34.86 seconds.
In the 400 medley relay, the Northern A quartet of Emma Casas, DeCarlo, Sophia Moore and Stockinger was fourth in 3:51.52, edging out by two-hundredths of a second the NMU B unit of Evangeline Pierce, Araujo, Phini Schneider and Abigail Keen in 3:51.54.
Friday
The Wildcats held onto second place as DeCarlo continued to pace NMU, over two days totaling 51 points. She added a fifth place in the 100 breaststroke and fourth place with the 200 medley relay on Friday.
Santi ran her total up to 49 points and Araujo to 48. Santi was sixth in the 200 free and swam with the second-place 800 free relay, while Araujo was sixth in the 400 IM and on the fifth-place 800 free relay.
Stockinger was up to 42 points, Nicole Malinova at 40, Moore and Keen 39 apiece, Joanne Arbic and Nadia Blackmore 37 each, and Caitlin Aarseth 36.
In diving, Kalina Ceglinski won the one-meter with a six-dive score of 444.15 points, almost 23 points ahead of the field as teammate Josie Bossen was seventh.
The Wildcats’ A team in the 200 medley relay was fourth with Stockinger, DeCarlo, Schneider and Arbic in 1:43.90, while the B squad of Casas, Julia Zimpel, Malinova and Vicky Burda was sixth.
Schneider was fourth in the 100 butterfly in 57.73, Moore fifth in 57.88 and Malinova seventh and Pauline Izydorek eighth.
Araujo was sixth in the 400 IM in 4:40.23, while DeCarlo was fifth in the 100 breast in 1:03.98. Also in the 100 breast, Zimpel was seventh and Blackmore eighth.
In the 200 free, Keen was fifth in 1:55.34, Santi sixth in 1:55.47 and Elie Kilgard eighth.
And Pierce was runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 56.33, Cases fourth in 57.12 and Stockinger eighth.
Saturday
On the final day, Anika Wright was third in the 1,650 free in 17:15.60, while Geyer was fourth in 17:27.28 and Aarseth seventh.
Pierce was third in the 200 back and Casas eighth, while Stockinger was fifth in the 100 free in 52.26, Keen sixth in 52.30 and Arbic seventh.
In the 200 breast, Zimpel was sixth in 2:21.72 and Blackmore seventh, while in the 200 fly, Geyer was third in 2:08.90, Izydorek sixth in 2:11.98 and Moore eighth.
The NMU A team, names not available, was fourth in the 400 free relay in 3:28.76 while the B team was sixth.
