MARQUETTE — An eventful Thanksgiving week for the men’s basketball team at Northern Michigan University closes out this afternoon with a home game against Minnesota-Duluth at Vandament Arena.

The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on Marquette radio station WUPT 100.3 FM The Point, while fans can also view it as it is streamed online at FloCollege.

Fans can also follow @NMU_MensBBALL and @NMU_Wildcats on X (formerly Twitter) and @nmu_mbb on Instagram for updates, and also visit the NMU athletics website at nmuwildcats.com and look under the men’s basketball schedule for links to ticket information, live video, live statistics and a preview.

After the Wildcats defeated Northern State (South Dakota) 80-61 just over a week ago on Nov. 21 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, NMU remained in the central Wisconsin city to face Northwest Missouri State for the first time ever, also winning that game 69-51 to improve to 3-1, each of their four games so far played in the Dells.

Graduate student forward Dylan Kuehl had such a good weekend that he was named the conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

He pumped in a career-high 35 points in the victory over Northern State, shooting 59% from the field on 13-of-22 shooting, along with making 7 of 8 free throws, then adding in five rebounds and a game-high five assists.

Two days later, he added 16 rebounds to go with 18 points, missing his top career rebounding game by one, and added four assists.

He’s moved into the top 10 on NMU’s all-time scoring list with 1,538 points, and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, he the No. 1 scorer at 22.0 points per game, is third with 56.7% field goal shooting and also third with 8.0 rebounds an outing, and is fourth with 3.8 assists per game.

Then on Wednesday afternoon, the Wildcats were scheduled for their home opener against Concordia (Wisconsin), but the game was postponed due to the winter storm hitting the Upper Peninsula. NMU Sports Information indicated that the game will be made up at a later date, though that date has not been set yet.

Finally, today Northern really gets to play its home opener facing the Bulldogs, who are 4-1 after hosting the U.P.’s other two NCAA Division II schools last weekend. Duluth lost to Michigan Tech 57-48 and defeated Lake Superior State 72-69.

UMD averages 72.8 ppg while allowing 62.2 ppg, a top-12 team scoring defense nationally. Redshirt junior Caleb Siwek leads the Bulldogs with 21.8 ppg and shoots 55.6% from the field.

On Sunday at Wisconsin Dells, even though Kuehl had barely half the points he did in the game two days earlier, his 18 points was still the top scoring effort for any player on either team.

And the 16 rebounds were more than double of anyone else, too.

But he wasn’t a one-man band, with teammate Jackson Dudek adding 13 points, Cal Klesmit 11 points and a game-high five assists, and Sam Privet 10 points.

The Wildcats (3-1) had a massive 48-24 edge on the boards, NMU’s Trevor Polite also pulling down seven boards and Privet and Brooks Hinson each getting six.

Trey Moala paced the Bearcats (5-2) with 10 points.

After a back-and-forth first half where NW Missouri State actually led most of the way, Northern scored the final six points before intermission to go ahead 33-31 at halftime. That streak included two layups by Privet and one by Polite in the final three minutes.

The Wildcats’ momentum continued despite cooling their heels in the lockerroom at the break as NMU opened the second half with a 14-2 run to take a commanding 47-33 lead with 15:18 remaining. That spurt included a 3-pointer, layup and two dunks by Kuehl, a triple by Klesmit and layup by Dudek.

Northern’s lead remained in double digits the rest of the way. The closest the Bearcats got was 11 points, 49-38 with 10:33 left, and the biggest NMU margin was 19 points twice, the first time 63-44 with 3:55 left.
