NMU women’s cross country team releases slate of meets

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team has released its fall schedule that includes four meets before getting into the conference and NCAA championship tournaments.

Headed up by coach Jenny Ryan, the Wildcats open their season on Sept. 10 at the Ray Helsing Invitational at Ferris State in Big Rapids. NMU finished runner-up at this meet in 2018.

The Wildcats go to probably their biggest regular-season meet, the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota, two weeks later on Sept. 23. NMU placed seventh among 27 teams in its division last season, with the Wildcats’ Madison Malon leading the way with a 25th-place finish in a field of more than 300 runners.

Two weeks later on Oct. 8, Northern will be at the Lucian Rosa Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. NMU was third at the event last fall.

The regular season wraps up on Oct. 22 with the Warrior Challenge hosted by Wayne State in Detroit.

Then comes the GLIAC Championships, again two weeks later, also to be held in Detroit on Nov. 4.

The NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships are Nov. 19 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with the NCAA D-2 Championships on Dec. 3 in Seattle.

This and other NMU schedules can be found on the Wildcats’ athletics website, www.nmuwildcats.com.
