Marquette Reds’ strong pitching leads to home sweep over Escanaba Junior Cubs

MARQUETTE — Strong pitching throughout a doubleheader culminated with a pair of hurlers combining on a no-hitter in the nightcap as the Marquette Reds swept the Escanaba Junior Cubs in American Legion baseball action played at Gerard Haley Memorial Field in north Marquette on Wednesday evening.

Here is a synopsis of the games:

——————–

Reds 3, Jr. Cubs 1

In the opener, the visitors took the first lead before Marquette tied it in the third inning and took the lead for good in the fourth. The Cubs’ Tony Derkos knocked in Trenton Turchin for their first-inning lead.

The Reds tied it in the third on a Jake Toyras RBI single, then went ahead on a Nick Pantti RBI double and Chase Niemi RBI single.

Niemi also earned the victory as the second of three Marquette pitchers. Pantti started and went three innings, allowing one run on one hit and three walks as he struck out two. Niemi went two innings, with no runs nor hits, two walks and a strikeout, while Gib Jezewski got the save, going one inning with a hit allowed and strikeout.

In addition to Toyras, Pantti and Niemi, Jezewski had a single for the Reds as he also stole two bases.

Starter Cannon Arnt took the pitching loss for the Cubs, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks as he fanned four. Nicholas Chiu went 1 2/3 innings, with zeroes across the board except for a hit.

Reds 10, Jr. Cubs 0

In the nightcap shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule, Braidan Noskey and Easton Miller combined for Marquette’s no-hitter.

Noskey started, went the first four innings and earned the victory, walking one and K’ing six. Miller went in the fifth with zeroes across the board as he induced a game-ending double play.

Marquette scored single runs in the first and third innings for a narrow 2-0 lead before adding two more in the fourth and six in the fifth to end the game early.

Toyras went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Jezewski had a hit, two RBIs and a run. Miller, Isaac Sarles and Ian Sheltrow each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, while Noskey had a hit and RBI and Pantti and Aiden McCollum both scored twice.

Among the Reds’ 10 stolen bases, McCollum and Sarles each had two.

Derkos and Turchin towed the rubber for the Cubs, between them allowing 10 runs — but only four earned — on seven hits and three walks as they fanned three.
