One-run game not closest result on opening night in Iron Range Women’s Softball League

NEGAUNEE — The Iron Range Women’s Softball League kicked off its season on May 11 with a one-run game and another game even closer than that.

How was that possible? Well, Venice-Hickey’s finished in a 13-13 tie with Signs Unlimited in Class B.

Here’s a rundown of results from the league, which has gone to two divisions this year:

Class A

Opening night’s one-run game saw Jasper Ridge Brewery defeating River Rock 15-14 in extra innings.

The winners’ Taylor Oakland and LeAnn Saarela each hit homers, while River Rock’s Kelsi Gustafson went 3 for 4 and Hannah Voskuhl hit a grand slam homer.

Tera Baker went 4 for 4 with a homer and Melanee Maddock was 3 for 4 as Dave’s Collision upended Jack’s Teepee 17-6. Jack’s Hailey Thompson doubled while Jordann Grigg was credited with pitching a “great game.”

Sam Sailer went 4 for 4 and Jackie Skradski scored four times as Buck’s Party Store blasted Heritage Glove Repair 21-2. The Repairers’ Kerry Tornberg and Steph Robar each were 1 of 2 with a run scored.

Lexi Pomplun and Jordan Kowalski each tripled and Vanessa Briones and Morgan Kowalski both doubled as 906 Sports Bar shut down Pasquali’s 19-0.

And a team effort was credited for Screened Image-Venice 2’s success in a 24-4 win over Tino’s.

Class B

In the tie game, Venice-Hickey’s Nichi Sundberg smacked a grand slam, Gabby Concord hit a homer and Caylie Gray and Becky Lee both tripled, while Signs Unlimited’s Liz King and Linda Dompierre were credited with “great hits.”

Terri Todd homered and Madison Pruett was 3 for 4 to support winning pitcher Kathy Gischia as Palomaki Family Chiropractic slid past Quality Car Care 19-15. QCC’s Amy Young homered and Connie Kontio was 3 for 4.

Tia Mattila tripled, doubled and collected two RBIs to lead Pineshears to a 23-8 win over U.P. Fabricating, whose Val Prusi was 3 for 3.

Gabby Herbert and Hillary Richardson each homered as Martin Sports scored a 22-10 win over Eagles, whose Chantel Woodbridge was 4 for 4 and Elaina Treloar tripled.

Globe Printing dropped Willey’s Tire Shop 27-13, while Paradise Bar had a bye.
