50th class of U.P. Sports Hall of Fame inductees honored

The 50th class of the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame was inducted on Saturday night at the Island Resort & Casino in Harris. The 50th class of the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame was inducted on Saturday night at the Island Resort & Casino in Harris.

Several of the inductees made their mark in the Marquette-Alger-Baraga-Luce County area:

Tom Russo of Marquette coached for 24 years at four schools and directed the Negaunee boys to the Class C state championship in 2000, compiling a 319-210 career record.

Mike Dellangelo of Ishpeming led the Hematites to the Class C state football title in 1975, snapping Hudson’s state-record 72-game winning streak in the process. He ran for 4,267 yards as a three-year starting tailback and won seven times at the U.P. Finals in track and field.

John Pistulka of Manistique was a first-team all-state football pick at Manistique and U.P. lineman of the year in 1977, while also being a member of the Emeralds’ 1,000-point club in boys basketball.

Chris Nance of Newberry was a three-sport star at Newberry, establishing 20 school records, including scoring 1,277 career points in basketball.
