Upper Peninsula junior lugers place at World Cup meet in Austria

NEGAUNEE — Three Upper Peninsula Luge Club members competed in a Natural Track Junior World Cup meet at Winterleiten, Austria, on Friday as part of the Federation of International Luge.

The top place from the Negaunee-based club representing the United States was Katie Cookman of Marquette, who finished 19th in the junior women’s race in a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 30.72 seconds.

For the junior men, Torrey Cookman of Marquette was 26th in 2:14.48, while Henry Anderson of Appleton, Wisconsin, was 32nd in 2:19.58 and Kurt Bates of Ishpeming was 36th in 2:40.55.

The U.S. junior team will compete in four more World Cup races throughout Austria and northern Italy during this winter.
