HOUGHTON — A pair of former high school football stars from the area now playing for Michigan Tech have earned All-GLIAC recognition, MTU announced on Thursday.

Freshman Drew Wyble, who played at Marquette Senior High School just a year ago, was named to the conference’s Second Team as a placekicker, while senior John Paramski of Newberry earned honorable mention at linebacker.

Wyble converted on nine of 11 field goal tries over 10 games, an 82 percent success rate, with a season-long 35-yarder against Wayne State.

In the same game against WSU, he also split the uprights with a 22-yard field goal on the game’s final play that lifted the Huskies to a victory.

He also made 23 of 24 extra-point kicks, 96 percent success, earned GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors and averaged 34.3 yards on 36 punts, including five punts landing inside the 20-yard line.

Paramski led Tech with 78 total tackles that included a pair of quarterback sacks and four tackles for loss as he also had two fumble recoveries.

The Huskies had a pair of First Team honorees, both as defensive linemen, sophomore Sam Kinne and senior Nate LaJoie of Sault Ste. Marie.

Joining Wyble on the Second Team were junior defensive back Braxton Blackwell, sophomore defensive back Michael Bates Jr., junior wide receiver Jordan Janssen, senior linebacker Marvin Wright and junior offensive lineman Hayden Huttula.

Five more were honorable mention. In addition to Paramski was junior quarterback Will Ark, freshman wide receiver Darius Willis, senior wide receiver Hunter Richards of Houghton and freshman defensive lineman Austin Schlicht.

MTU finished the season with a 6-4 record, including 5-2 in the GLIAC.
