Finlandia hockey players named national Academic All-Stars

HANCOCK — Fifteen Finlandia hockey players from its men’s and women’s teams were named Krampade/American Hockey Coaches Association Academic All-Stars, the university announced this week.

Student-athletes were required to attain a 3.75 grade-point average for the fall semester and participate in at least 40 percent of their team’s games.

The Lions men had 11 selections, including five who earned this distinction for the second time — seniors Connor Hannon and Nick Tobey and sophomores Dylan Paavola, Cory Richardson and Tyler Watungwa.

First-time recipients were senior Jayson Dahlquist, junior Santeri Seppinen, sophomore Jack Giddings and freshmen Lucas Patton, Phil Schader and Tyler Vanuden.

Four more were named Academic All-Stars from the women’s team, with one — senior Kait Ryynanen — making it for the second time.

First-time recipients were senior Bella Abear and freshmen Cassidy Becia and Kylee Hopp.

For the 2019-20 season, the men’s team compiled a 5-18-2 record and the women were 0-24.
