Negaunee’s Luke Mattson leads local contingent for Bay College men’s basketball in tourney split

ESCANABA — Sophomore Luke Mattson, a Negaunee High School graduate, led an area contingent in scoring for the Bay College men’s basketball team as it split a pair of games at its own Quality Inn & Suites Holiday Classic.

Mattson, who started both games, scored nine points in the Norse’s 97-64 victory over Harper College on Saturday before adding five points in Bay’s 98-82 loss to nationally ranked No. 8 Milwaukee Area Technical College on Sunday.

On Saturday, Mattson made 4 of 5 shots from the field, including the only 3-pointer he tried, with three rebounds in just 11 minutes.

Ishpeming sophomore Dondre Yohe added eight points, hitting all three of his shots including a triple to go with four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Munising sophomore Cade Contreras scored three points and dished out five assists and got a rebound, while Gwinn freshman Austin Forbes also scored three points on a triple and had four assists and two rebounds.

On Sunday, Mattson hit both his shots from the field, adding three rebounds, again in just 11 minutes.

Yohe scored two points on the only shot he took.

Bay got as close as 11 points, 80-69, with six minutes left on a layup by Mattson.

Bay (7-5) plays at another tournament this weekend at the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Classic in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, facing Rochester Community and Technical College at 4 p.m. Saturday before taking on the host Rams at 3 p.m. Sunday.
