NEW ORLEANS — The Northern Michigan University women’s track and field team notched a few more awards recently after a strong 2018-19 season.

The Wildcats earned All-Academic Team status and six athletes notched U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association academic honors. To earn an All-Academic award, athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and have a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships during either the indoor or outdoor seasons.

Marquette native and then-Wildcats senior Shayla Huebner was one of the honorees. She was a First Team All-American in the 800-meter run during the indoor and outdoor season last year and set NMU records in the event in both seasons.

She also helped set records on the 4×400 relay team.

Another award winner was then-senior Michelle Juergen, who was the GLIAC Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Meet at the conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She was also a Second Team All-American in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships and finished 11th in the high jump at the Outdoor Championships.

Escanaba native and then-senior Lynsey Collins was the third honoree as she was part of the 4X400 relay team at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She helped the team to an 11th place finish and she and Huebner both set a new Wildcats record in the event.

Then-senior Paige Dutcher and then-junior Paige Du Bois were on the Outdoor 4×400 team that broke the school record at the Dr. Keeler Invitational back in May, while also winning the event and setting a NCAA Provisional mark (3:46.86).

The final Wildcats honoree was then-sophomore Nina Augsten. She racked up a total of 4,520 points to win the heptathlon at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships.

Northern finished the year with a team GPA of 3.43. To being considered for Scholar Team of the Year, a program must finish high at the National Championship meets and have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. The Wildcats finished 44th at the Indoor Championships and 62nd at the Outdoor Championships.
