Marquette Oldtimers outslug Gwinn, 18-8

GWINN — Marquette put on a hitting clinic to the tune of 25 hits to post an 18-8 victory at Gwinn in an oldtimers softball game played Monday afternoon.

It follows a narrow 6-5 victory posted by Marquette in a game played in Negaunee last Wednesday.

Gwinn is scheduled to travel to LaCombe Field in Negaunee for their matchup at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 25.

Marquette representatives said they are working on hosting games against Negaunee and Gwinn around the first week of August.

On Monday, Marquette broke a 3-3 tie with seven runs over the second and third innings, though Gwinn mounted a comeback to come within 10-7 before one final outburst put the visitors over the top.

Don O’Neill was the recipient of his teammates’ offense, as he picked up the pitching win by going all seven innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits with eight walks as he struck out one.

Dave Derouin took the loss for Gwinn, also going the distance as he walked two and fanned two.

O’Neill helped his own cause with three hits and was joined by Joe Stupsky also with three hits to go with five RBIs. Teammate Ralph Beauchamp hit an inside-the-park homer in the sixth inning.

Also joining the three-hit parade for Marquette were Greg Sutherland, Darryl Hamari, Rich Schwemin and Leo Smith.

Gwinn’s Dan Fleury and Loren Reetz each cracked a double.
