Blues whitewash Pulaski for Firecracker tourney split

By Journal Sports Staff

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The Marquette Blues won Sunday to pull out a 2-2 split against all-Wisconsin opposition at the American Legion baseball Firecracker Tournament held Friday through Sunday.

The Blues defeated Pulaski 12-0 Sunday to go with a 13-7 victory over the Green Bay Shockers on Friday. In between, Marquette fell to Marinette 4-0 and Manitowoc 5-0 on Saturday.

The Blues ended Sunday’s game after just five innings, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings for a fast start.

Pitcher Hogan Nemetz was the beneficiary of his team’s support, though he wasn’t too shabby himself, pitching a five-inning, complete-game shutout, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out two.

Marquette batters amassed nine hits, including five doubles, off a trio of Pulaski hurlers.

Peter VandenAvond led the way, going 2 for 4 with both of his hits being doubles. He had an RBI and scored a run.

Nemetz was 2 for 2 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and a walk, while teammate Jakob Peterson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored as he was hit by a pitch.

Blake Henriksen was 1 for 2, his hit a double, with an RBI, two runs, two walks and a stolen base; Holden Shaneburger went 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs; and Jacob Allard-Soucey doubled and scored a run.

Despite the holiday week, the Blues will be busy on the diamond, going to the Copper Country Flames in Hancock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, hosting the Negaunee Diamonds for their traditional Fourth of July game at 10 a.m. Thursday, then traveling to Wisconsin again for four games at the Antigo Tournament this weekend.
