Marquette County Mavericks blank Blagec Heating in Superiorland Baseball League

GWINN — Rain knocked out two of the three Superiorland Baseball League games scheduled for Monday, while the one that did get in was called after five innings due to the same weather combined with darkness.

The Marquette County Mavericks blanked Blagec Heating of Iron Mountain 8-0 in five innings at the Forsyth Township Ball Fields in Gwinn. The other two games never got in — State Farm-Jill Leonard vs. Negaunee Blasters in Negaunee and Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen at the Channing Railroaders.

Makeup dates haven’t been determined for the latter games, though a makeup for a game postponed from earlier in the season will be played at 7 p.m. EDT Thursday — the Blasters at Channing.

In the Mavs’ win Monday, starting pitcher Steve Hintsala and reliever Dave Speaker Jr. worked to twirl the shutout, with Speaker coming in after the game was interrupted for the first time by rain in the third inning.

Hintsala went 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit as he struck out three. Speaker tossed the final 2 2/3 innings with two hits allowed as he fanned two.

Speaker preserved the shutout with some help from his defense. In the fourth after both of Blagec’s hits, Mavericks’ catcher Spencer Larson made a tag at the plate after a relay throw from deep rightfield.

Teammate Hunter Larson scored a run in the first inning and Jake Spear in the second to get MCM (4-0) off and running.

In the third, the Mavs’ Aaron “Goose” Adriano led off with a double and scored to make it 3-0 before a five-run fifth all but ended the suspense. After Sam Prentice and Brad Jalonen scored early in the rally, Jake Spear and James Larsen II hit back-to-back singles, then trotted home on Hunter Larson’ three-run homer to deep right-center for the final 8-0 margin.

Adriano, Larsen and Hunter Larson each finished with two hits, all three also drawing at least one walk.

Details weren’t available for Blagec (1-3).
