NEGAUNEE — The Westwood boys track and field look like it’ll be a force to be reckoned with after the first couple of meets of the season.

After a strong showing at the Superior Dome Division 1 meet earlier this week, the Patriots won the Negaunee Quadrangular Thursday afternoon with 84 points, 22 ahead of the host Miners. Calumet took third with 52 and Houghton fourth with 43.

Westwood won 10 of the 17 events, including three of the relays (4X100, 4X200, 4X400). Nathan Beckman and Jack Boese both won two events for the Patriots with the former winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the latter taking the 110 and 300 hurdles. Other champions for the Patriots were Blake Hewitt (shot put), Elliott LeMire (pole vault) and Chad Pohlman (400 dash). Negaunee’s lone winner was Tyler Hintsala in the high jump.

Houghton won three events, including the remaining relay (4X800). The other two victories came from Joe Wood in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. The final three wins went to the Copper Kings with Dryden Nelson winning the long jump and Eli McFarland taking the 800 run. Calumet also won the discus throw.

Over on the girls side, it was the Gremlins who came out on top with 94.5 points with Westwood coming in second (75.5), Negaunee third (63) and Calumet fourth (23). Houghton won the 4X200 relay and got victories from Elli Wagner (100 dash) and Paige DeForge (long jump).

The Patriots may have come up short of the championship, but still had an impressive day. They took first in the 4X800 and 4X400 relays and had five individual champions. Tessa Leece won both the 800 run and high jump, while Elizabeth Williams finished first in the 400 dash, Katelyn Anttila won the pole vault and Allyssea Smith took the 300 hurdles title.

Negaunee took home four championships, two of them coming from Emily Paupore (1,600 and 3,200 runs). The other two wins came from Abbie Tollefson (discus) and Leah McCracken (shot put).

Finally, Calumet notched three victories including the remaining 4X100 relay. The other wins were from Mackenzie Peters (110 hurdles) and Carli Jacques (200 dash).
