Legion Jr. Wildcats improve to 8-0

MARQUETTE — The Marquette American Legion Junior Wildcats 14-under AA travel hockey team improved to 8-0 this season after winning the Wisconsin Elite Hockey Tournament last weekend.

The weekend before, the Wildcats swept a pair of games at home, beating Copper Country 7-1 and 3-1 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.

At the Wisconsin event held in Mequon, Coach Jon Nebel’s icers defeated Madison Teal 6-2, Milwaukee Gold 2-0 and Team Northeast 2-0.

Against Madison, Legion’s Drew Dellies scored twice while teammates Jackson Potulny, Cole Ranta, Jack Sides and AJ Bottari added one apiece. Liam Beerman earned the victory in the Marquette net.

In the game vs. Madison, Ethan Phillips broke the scoreless tie while Ranta knocked in an empty-netter for insurance. Anna Byczek got the shutout victory in net.

In the finals against Team Northeast, Jake Garrow scored both goals while Beerman earned the shutout in goal.

The Marquette team was scheduled to compete at the Boo in the Soo tournament in Sault Ste. Marie this weekend, Friday through today, then will be off until Nov. 3-4 when it plays three games at the Soo Lakers.
