Red Earth Classic mountain bike, trail running races on Saturday

NEGAUNEE — Deadline to sign up is tonight for the fifth annual Red Earth Classic mountain bike and foot races to be held in western Marquette County on Saturday morning and afternoon.

For mountain bikes, there are the 32-mile Beast, 19-mile Loader, 12-mile Dozer and three-mile Junior Classic races, while for trail runners are a half-marathon, 10K and 5K races. The 5K can also be walked, while a fourth run will be a one-mile trail run for kids.

Late sign-up fees are $65 for the Beast, Loader and Dozer races; $50 for the half-marathon run; $35 for the 5K trail walk and run; $30 for the one-run kids run; and $25 for the Junior Classic bike race. Registration is available online on the event’s home page, www.redearthclassic.com.

All races begin and end at Jackson Mine Park in Negaunee, opening with the Beast race at 9 a.m. and the last to start the kids’ 5K and one-mile runs at 1:35 p.m.

The Beast, which can be attempted solo or as a two-person relay.
