Kendra (Palmer) Anderson top shooter to open U.P. Ladies Golf Association championship tourney

MARQUETTE — Abby DuFrane of Marinette, Wisconsin, didn’t even have to show up at the Marquette Golf Club on Sunday to earn the No. 1 seed for the championship flight of the 91st Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association championship tournament.

She earned her position by winning last year’s tournament.

Earning the No. 2 seed with the best round of Sunday was Kendra (Palmer) Anderson of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The former Wawonowin Country Club member and Marquette Senior High School graduate shot 77 on the Heritage course, one better than Zoe Woodworth of Portage Lake, who had 78.

They will be joined by 13 other women in the championship flight, which was to kick off with match play this morning.

The flight flight on down each consists of seven or eight golfers, with all flights holding matches this morning and the next two mornings. With twice as many golfers in the championship flight, that flight will have an extra match-play round early Wednesday afternoon, too, to determine its winner.

The balance of the championship flight includes Karen Plaisier of Wawonowin and high schooler Paxton Johnson of Escanaba, each with 80; Anna Mendelin of Marquette GC and Becky Cecconi of Iron Mountain, 85s; Joann Poncino of Iron Mountain, 86; Susan Micklow of Marquette GC, 87; Nancy Osier of Wakefield, 88; Jan Hruska of Marquette GC, Jennifer Marietta of MGC and Karen McCorkle of Gladstone, all with 89; Karla McCutcheon of Marquette GC, 90; Barbara Rossi of Houghton, 91; and Kristie Markell of Iron Mountain, 93.

No playoff was needed to determine the 16th position, according to Marquette GC pro Marc Gilmore.
