Westwood netters sweep Ishpeming

Negaunee stays undefeated with win over Escanaba

ISHPEMING — The Westwood tennis team pulled off a strong performance Thursday as the Patriots defeated Ishpeming 8-0.

Patriots Brett Fredrickson (No. 1 singles), Jake Kerkela (No. 2) and Anthony Couveau (No. 3) each took their matches in two sets, while Matt Paavo outlasted Ishpeming’s Darius Yohe in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 7-6).

On the doubles side, Westwood took each of its matches in two sets, but the No. 4 match was competitive. In the end though, the Patriots’ Seth Smith and Matt LaFountain defeated Hematites Ryan Hyry and Devin Kent 7-6, 6-2.

“Westwood is really strong, but I thought we did well in some of the matches,” Ishpeming head coach Erl Langness said. “We weren’t consistent enough to get wins, but we put up a good fight.”

Ishpeming plays at West Iron County Monday, while Westwood heads to Negaunee.

Negaunee 5, Escanaba 3

At Escanaba, the Miners remained undefeated at 7-0-1 after taking down the Eskymos.

Negaunee won three of the four singles matches with Thomas Sertich (No. 3) and Chas Kumpula (No. 4) winning their matches in two sets. However, Eric Hurst had to fight his way to a three-set win over Esky’s Christer Carne in the No. 1 competition (6-0, 54-6, 6-4).

Escanaba’s only singles win came in the No. 2 match where Josh Grassel defeated Negaunee’s Luke Skewis in a hard-fought three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-1).

In doubles action, the two teams split the matchs. The Eskymos took the Nos. 1 and 2 matches in two quick sets, while the Miners got wins in Nos 3 and 4. The No. 4 match was the most competitive of the four with Negaunee’s Jake Larson and Evan Hassell defeating Esky’s Charlie Wilson and Max Shalift in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).

“Jake and Evan have done a real nice job and have usually played their best in some pretty tough situations,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said. “They’ll be important for us. In certain flights we’re still learning how to become a little mentally tougher, but we’ll get there.

Negaunee hosts Westwood on Monday.
