Miners clinch title share

NEGAUNEE – Clinching a share of the Mid-Peninsula Conference title in the process, the host Negaunee High School boys basketball team remained undefeated Friday night with a 57-37 win over Norway.

Dre Tuominen and Jay Lori scored 15 points apiece as the Miners improved to 19-0 overall and 11-0 in the M-PC. Negaunee must defeat second-place Iron Mountain at the Mountaineers’ gym on Tuesday night to earn the league crown outright.

Trent Bell added 12 points for the Miners, who led 28-15 at the half.

“It’s great to get a win on Senior Night,” NHS head coach dan Waterman said. “We completed an undefeated season at home, which is nice.

“We shared the ball well and got some balanced scoring, which is good to see.”

Negaunee jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back.

“We got out of the gates well, then had a solid, workmanlike effort after that,” Waterman said.

Bryce Grayvold led Norway (10-8, 5-6) with 13 points. Connor Ortman chipped in 11.

NHS took the JV contest, 50-38.
