Iron Range-Togo’s vies for berth

MARQUETTE – The Iron Range-Togo’s youth hockey team from Marquette and Negaunee finished runner-up at its Upper Peninsula District 8 tournament in Iron River last weekend.

While the team didn’t earn the automatic berth to the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association’s Midget BB state finals to be held in Livonia from March 11-13, it does get another chance at it this weekend at the Runners Up Tournament to be held in another Detroit suburb, Fraser.

This second tourney features four teams from various state districts, with the Marquette-Negaunee team set to play in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against a team from the Flint-Tri Cities-Port Hurton area.

If Iron Range-Togo’s wins that game, it advances to the championship at noon Sunday against a team from the greater Detroit area.

The team that wins this abbreviated tournament goes to the state finals as the representative for District 6, the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Kalamazoo area.

In the District 8 event, held in Iron River, IR-Togo’s won its first four games before losing to Munising 4-3 in the championship.

Earlier wins were 3-1 over Calumet, 4-2 over Ontonagon, 10-1 over Escanaba and 4-2 over Main Street Pizza, Marquette’s other team.
