Gaspervich soars

MARQUETTE – Bre Gaspervich led four members of the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team in double figures scoring-wise Saturday in a 64-53 GLIAC win over visiting Hillsdale.

Gaspervich scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as coach Troy Mattson’s Wildcats improved to 7-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Taylor Hodell added 11 points, while NMU teammates Chloe Tompkins and Kendall Martenet contributed 10 apiece, at the Berry Events Center.

Morgan Blair paced the Chargers (8-8, 5-7) with nine points.

The Chargers led the Wildcats, 20-14, after one quarter of play, but NMU went on a 10-0 run – highlighted by a triple from Gaspervich – for a 24-20 advantage.

The teams were knotted at 30 heading into the locker room.

Gaspervich beat the buzzer with a layup to give the Wildcats a 48-43 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Northern went on a 7-0 run in the final stanza to grow its lead to 59-51 after a Youngstrom free throw.

The Chargers cut the lead to six, 59-53, with 2:51 to play, but Northern’s Tess Weatherly sank a layup to put the game out of reach, at 61-53, with 50 seconds to play.

The Wildcats will next travel to Lake Superior State Thursday, with tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
