Area trio claims U.P. mat titles

MARQUETTE – Three area wrestlers won individual titles at the Upper Peninsula Championships high school wrestling meet held at Marquette Senior High School on Saturday.

Junior Beau Caster of Marquette, senior Hunter Sadler of Munising and senior Landon Burton of Manistique were the winners as their teams finished the highest from the area at the 18-team meet.

Munising was fifth with 104 points, Marquette sixth with 95 and Manistique seventh with 90.

Other area team scores were Westwood, ninth with 84 points; Newberry, 10th with 83; Gwinn, 11th with 53; Negaunee, 16th with 32; and Ishpeming, 17th with 29.

Gladstone won the meet by nearly 40 points with 222.

Escanaba was second with 184, while Kingsford was third with 128.5.

The meet’s most valuable wrestler was Austin Demeuse, a junior who pinned junior Tanner Gonzalez of Manistique at 1:47 in the finals at 160.

Caster won the 152-pound division, beating Shawn McIntyre of Westwood with a 16-0 decision in the championship match. It was Caster’s third victory of the day, which included a 50-second pin of Andrew Miles of Munising in the semifinals.

Sadler shut out Braydon Fitzpatrick 10-0 in the finals at 189, his third victory of the day that also included a 15-0 technical fall of Kevin Roberts of Gwinn in the semis.

Burton blanked Hunter Collins of Newberry 3-0 in the 215-pound finale, his third victory that included a pin at 5:41 of Trevor Kirkpatrick-Bray of Gwinn in the semis.

Munising had the most top-five medalists with six, including two runners-up – Zack McGowan at 112, who lost in the finals 1-0 to Zack Jones of Kingsford; and Nick Miles at 119.

In addition, the Mustangs’ Andrew Miles at 152 and Lukas Rittenger at 160 were fourth and Christian Cole at 135 was fifth.

Marquette’s Cole Arntsen was third at 145 and Michael Hubbard fourth at 189.

Manistique had two runners-up – Gonzalez and Louie Berry at 140, who lost 7-2 to Seth Collins of Kingsford in the finals. The Emeralds’ Dylan Stevenson was fourth at 145.

Westwood had five medalists, including a pair of runners-up – Nathan Brewer at 103, who lost 7-4 to Tyler Currie of Sault Ste. Marie in the finals, and McIntyre.

In addition, Wyatt Makosky at 130 was fourth, while Cedric Nora at 125 and Trent Deans at 285 were fifth.

Collins paced Newberry with his runner-up spot, while Nathan Magnusson at 112 and Cameron Symonds at 135 were third and Alex Henry at 160 was fifth.

Gwinn’s medalists were Roberts and Kirkpatrick-Bray each in third.

Ishpeming had one medalist, fifth-place Daren Giuchin at 140, while Negaunee’s top finishers were Sam Collins at 189 and Michael Pizziola at 285 in sixth.
