Patriots comes up short; Emeralds turn back Modeltowners

By Journal Sports Staff

KINGSFORD – Westwood was unable to match Kingsford’s physical play in the fourth quarter as the Flivvers ran off with a 59-48 high school boys basketball victory on Friday night.

The Patriots led 38-35 after three quarters before the nonconference loss left them at 1-1.

“I thought our kids came out and played really, really hard in the first half,” WHS coach Chad Hewitt said after the halftime score was knotted 21-21.

“In the fourth quarter, (Kingsford) was able to get it down there. We just didn’t match their physicality inside.”

Free throws also doomed Westwood, as Kingsford made 15 of 23 while the Pats were just 0 of 2.

Senior Luke Gray led Westwood scorers with 17 points, while senior teammate Ryan Stanaway added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Kingsford (6-1) also won the JV game, 63-47.

Manistique 57, Gwinn 44

At Manistique, the host Emeralds notched their first win of the season, 57-44 over the Gwinn Modeltowners, in Mid-Peninsula Conference action Friday night.

Jordan Turan led the Emeralds (1-2 overall, 1-2 league) with 12 points.

“He got in foul trouble early on, so he sat a lot of the second quarter,” Emeralds head coach Ed Marietti said.

“Then, he got his fourth early in the third. But overall, he played well.

“It was really the tale of two halves. We got up on them, and then they just kind of went on a spree and wound up with a three point lead at the half.

“We came out in the third and started chipping away,” he said. “They didn’t do much of anything.”

The Emeralds shot 38 percent from the field (19 of 50), while the Modeltowners were 30 percent (16 of 54).

Tony Hoholik led the Emeralds in rebounding with six, and also added eight points.

Theo Redlon (13) and Jordan Stein (11) combined for 24 points for Gwinn (0-3, 0-2).

Gwinn won the jayvee contest 37-33.
