Munising not able to get untracked vs. Broncos

MUNISING – The Broncos of Bark River-Harris had a score to settle Friday night with the Munising Mustangs after dropping a match-up against them earlier in the season.

BR-H head coach Al Stenberg attributed that loss in large part to seven turnovers the Broncos committed.

This time, under the lights at Munising, the Broncos looked to be in much better control of the ball – and the game – as they downed the Mustangs 22-6 in Division 8 pre-district prep football action.

“I feel relieved,” Stenberg said. “Last time we played up here, I thought we played pretty well other than the turnovers.

“You know, when you turn the ball over seven times, you just want redemption. You want another chance, and that’s what we got. It feels good.”

The Broncos (8-2) took control on their first drive of the game and never looked back.

Though the Mustangs made some big pass plays, the Broncos’ offense was better and the key to their victory.

Running back Alex Mathias scored two touchdowns, one from three yards out and the other from two yards out. Mathias carried the ball a total of 22 times for 151 yards, which was more than Munising’s total offense.

“It’s how our offense is designed, where he (Mathias) is really the only true running back in our offense,” Stenberg said.

All three of the Broncos’ touchdowns came from inside the 5-yard line, as Iver Stenberg opened the scoring for the Broncos on a 2-yard rush.

Mathias’ touchdowns, coupled with two successful two-point conversion attempts, gave the Broncos a 22-0 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Munising’s lone touchdown came off the arm of quarterback Alec Blank, who aired one out 25 yards to find receiver Mike Graves in the end zone for the score. Their two-point conversion attempt was no good and the final score reflected a Broncos’ victory, 22-6.

“Their offensive line just did an outstanding job tonight coming off the ball,” Mustang head coach Jeff Seaberg said. “They made some huge holes for the backs and they’ve got good team speed all around.

“They’re tough to stop when they’ve got their game going and we just didn’t do a very good job.”

The Mustangs ended last season with a trip to the Division 8 State Finals game at Ford Field. They fell to Muskegon Catholic Central

“They (the seniors) have done a great job. They’re used to winning,” Seaberg said. “Losing early in the post-season is not on the top of their list of things to do. It’s a tough one to take.

“Worse than the game is to see this group of young men leave the program.”

The Broncos will face the winner of today’s Crystal Falls Forest Park and Lake Linden-Hubbell match-up.
