West end dominance

By Journal Sports Staff

GWINN – Ishpeming was dominant in the flights it won, dropping just five games in total in a 6-2 high school girls tennis victory at Gwinn on Monday.

The Modeltowners fought hard for a pair of three-set victories at two of the singles flights, however.

Gwinn’s Lorraine Jenerou-Vandermate pulled out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over the Hematites’ Kassey Kytola, while the Modeltowners’ Makayla Peterson held off Emma Bleau, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7.

“Lorraine was a real fighter today,” GHS coach Darcia Mattson said. “To be down after the first set and fight back, she used her hustling and ability to move around the court and stay focused.”

She was also impressed with Ishpeming’s Bleau.

“She came in as a substitute and battled back from 5-0 down with the match on the line in the third-set (supertiebreaker),” the Gwinn coach said.

“Ishpeming is just so very consistent across the board. But my girls are so young and I’m hoping we’re going to get better in the second half of this season and going forward into next year.”

Both teams are at home for matches starting at 11 a.m. today, with Ishpeming hosting Munising and Gwinn entertaining Negaunee.

Negaunee 7, Kingsford 1

At Negaunee, the match was the most interesting at doubles where Kingsford picked up its win and severely tested the Miners at two other flights.

In singles, however, Negaunee (5-0) swept through all four matches in straight sets, losing just nine games total. NHS was led by Angela Ring taking a 6-1, 6-2 win over Katy Hicks at No. 1 singles.

NHS’ No. 3 doubles team of Skylar Taavola and Lexi Taavola needed three sets to dispatch Sarah Premo and Kira Peters, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile, the Miners’ No. 1 duo of Lauren Anderson and Nicole Violetta won in straight sets, but needed tiebreakers to win both sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), over the Flivvers’ Tori DalSanto and Mariana Bianco.

“There were a lot good matches and both sides had to play through the heat,” Negaunee coach Kyle Saari said. “Angie put together a nice match … and it’s beneficial to win two close setters.”

Westwood 7, WIC 1

At Iron River, the Patriots won two of the three matches that went three sets to coast.

Westwood’s Marissa Carello won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles over West Iron County’s Katarina Serbentas, while Olivia Derocha and Bridget Wood overcame a first-set heartbreaker for a 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over Megan Quayle and Natalie Tomasoski.

WIC’s lone victory came at No. 2 doubles, where Allie Schive and Sydney Schram held off Courtney Clisch and Paige Rivard, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.

While the Pats’ No. 1 singles Lauren Farley had to sweat out a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jessie Prudhomme, WHS’ other four wins included just nine lost games.

Westwood is back home today for a match against Marquette this morning.

Iron Mountain 6,

Marquette 2

At Marquette, Redettes’ coach Derek Sandstrom was particularly pleased with the performance of freshman Ashlee Tripp, who won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles over Libby Brown.

“We ran into a solid team,” he said. “One of the bright spots was the performance of … Ashlee Tripp. It was her first taste of singles and she played well.”

The other Marquette (2-1-1) victory came at No. 4 doubles, where the duo of Ashley McIntire and Morgan Collins breezed past Katelyn Charette and Megan Milliron, 6-0, 6-1.
