Northwood upends NMU

MARQUETTE – Northwood University recorded a four-set victory, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 25-14, over Northern Michigan University in the Wildcats’ opening GLIAC match of the season at Vandament Arena on Friday evening.

“The team executed our defensive game plan,” Northern head coach Dominic Yoder said. “There were just too many unforced errors. Northwood’s left-side attack was pretty dominant, but I thought we had a good counter to what they were trying to do offensively.

“We just need to be more consistent with our serve and our offensive attacking. We’ll do better (today).”

Lisa Studnicka had 11 kills, Madison Whitehead nine and Autumn Monsma seven to lead Northern Michigan offensively. Northwood countered with a defense that totaled 13 blocks and forced a number of errors.

As a team, Northern Michigan posted a .107 hitting percentage. The Wildcats also recorded 21 blocks.

Lynzi Svoboda led Northern Michigan with 13 assists and three service aces. Alex Berger had 13 digs and Studnicka 10.

The loss snapped NMU’s six-game winning streak as Northern is now 8-2 overall. NU is 3-6 and 1-0.

The Wildcats host their second GLIAC match against Lake Superior State at 2 p.m. today.
