NMU women runners dominate

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s women’s team had little trouble Friday winning the Upper Peninsula Cross Country Championships.

Led by Menominee sophomore Kameron Burmeister, the Wildcat women took top honors in the three team meet with 15 points.

Michigan Tech University placed second with 55, while Lake Superior State came in third with 73.

Burmeister covered the four-kilometer race that started and ended at the practice soccer field behind the Superior Dome in 14 minutes, 22.8 seconds.

Five NMU teammates followed: sophomore Vivian Hett (14:30.5); senior Megan Edic (14:33.8); freshman Sophie McDonald (14:40.1); sophomore Caroline Brisbois (14:54.6); and freshman Hannah Lonergan (14:56.0).

Andrea Lee – Michigan Tech’s top finisher – finished seventh (14:59.5).

MacKenzie Kelly led Lake Superior State with a 14th place finish (15:57.5).

In the men’s race, Tech captured the team title with 16 points. Lake Superior State came in second with 45, followed by the NMU club team with 89.

Jake Brown, running unattached, won the 6K event in 18:59.1. Adam Martin (19:26.5) and Ian Torchia (19:37.2) -both unattached – placed 2-3, respectively.

MTU took the next three places: Jason Saliga (19:42.9), Daniel Byrne (19:43.9) and Eric Parsell (19:45.8).

Adam Birkeland posted LSSU’s top time (20:11.8), good for ninth.

For the NMU club team, Jake Winkler placed 32nd (21:28.0)
