Williams, Rotundo shine at YMCA nationals

MARQUETTE – Sam Williams of Marquette placed 24th in the nation in the 100-meter breaststroke on Aug. 6 at the YMCA National Swimming Championships held at the Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis Natatorium.

It’s the highest finish for a swimmer representing the YMCA of Marquette County Killer Whales, according to a team spokesman. There were 124 athletes in the event.

Williams, 17, covered the distance in the 50-meter long course pool in 1 minute, 9.02 seconds.

The Marquette Senior High School student-athlete, who will be a senior this fall, also placed 43rd in the 50 breast, 58th in the 200 breast and 95th in the 100 butterfly.

Teammate Nathan Rotundo, 18, of Marquette equalled the team’s previous highest finish with 40th place in the 200 breast, going the distance in 2:33.30.

Rotundo, who will be a freshman at Northern Michigan University this fall, also finished 63rd in the 50 breast and 70th in the 100 breast.
