Missoula dominates with 10-0 win in title game

ROXANA, Delaware – The overall achievement outweighed the final outcome for the Escanaba Senior girls on Sunday at the Senior League World Series championship game against Missoula, Montana.

Despite playing a better game than the first time they faced the undefeated Garden City Little League team, Escanaba was simply outmatched from the start, falling 10-0 in six innings.

“They were a near-perfect team. They didn’t have any weaknesses,” Escanaba manager Andy Fields of Missoula said. “The catcher, their pitcher, their entire infield, their bats … we would have had to play a perfect game, and they would have really had to have an off day. They pull from a population of 75,000 and five high schools. We’re all just from Escanaba, but I prefer it that way.”

Missoula pitcher Macy Newbary was just as much on top of her game Sunday as she was earlier in the week, twirling a one-hitter on the mound and striking out nine with one walk. Thanks only to an error, Escanaba had but just three baserunners during the game.

Montana staked itself to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Although Escanaba’s Katie Ross, who came on in relief of Cassie Wisler, shut them down with two perfect innings in the second and third, no one could have kept the hot hitting of Montana down for long. Missoula blasted two home runs, including a three-run shot by Newbary in the fourth inning that made it 6-0. Taylor Holmes had a two-run shot.
