Japan adopts plan for stadium

TOKYO (AP) – Japan has adopted a new basic plan for its main stadium for the 2020 Olympics that would replace the costly original design that had to be scrapped.

The plan, adopted Friday by a government panel, says the main stadium will have a roof over the spectators’ seats. It said the stadium will be ready by the spring of 2020 in time for the Olympics.

Last month, Japan threw out an earlier design plan amid a public outcry over the 252 billion yen ($2 billion) price tag, which was nearly double the original estimate and would have made it the most expensive sports stadium ever.
